Junior Mooncatchers on the top of the Moon !

For this first official Junior’s Belgian Indoor Championship in history, no less than 5 Mooncatchers teams participated: 2 teams in the U14 division (born in 2003 or later), 2 teams in U17 (born in 2000 or later) and one U19 team (1998 or later). Moreover, with Christophe having also inscribed a new team from his school in Ixelles, AES, more than 50 young Brussels frisbee fanatics were present this Sunday 3rd! We were secretely dreaming of the 3 titles…

The meeting point was in Uccle at 7.30am with the U14 players. We arrived at the beautiful Sportoase complex in Leuven around 8.30am and at 9am, the first match of a long series began.

The U14 division started, and the 2 teams, Moon 1 and Moon 2, after 3 victories each, finished first of their respective groups, and thus avoided playing each other in the semis. Moon 2 then lost its first match of the Championships against Gentle, with a severe score of 7-1 despite having played quite well. But Gentle was stronger. In the other semi, Moon 1 won against Diabolic fairly easily, 9-1.

Meanwhile, the U17 and U19 had started their tournament, but we will get back to this; division by division.

Moon 2 U14 then played against Diabolic again, for the “bronze”, and after a very good match, Moon 2 took the win 7-1. The final between Gentle and Moon 1 began, the “belgian classico”, already apparent in the U14 division. Both teams played a great match, where the D’s often made the difference, and it was difficult for both teams to score points, 1-1, 2-2, 3-3. They took the game to universe point, and after a nice huck - foul - disc back to the lign - a pass - score - game, Moon 1 took the Belgian U14 Champion title. The end was a bit confusing, but the little Moons deserved their victory against a very strong Gentle team.

The Spirit of the Game in this final, and in the U14 division, was excellent overall, during the entire day. The teams’ rule knowledge being quite good, there were few travels (except for AES, but they are still beginning), a very nice atmosphere, despite a “competition with medals” between young players of 13 years of age maximum.

A small word for Tof’s team from AES, who won their first match ever for the 7th/8th place against mini-Gentle, during a match that took place in an epic atmosphere, with 10-year-old kids going nuts! The final score was 8-4, but it was quite anecdotic. What a game, and what fun it was!

In the U17 division, Moon 1 easily won it’s first 2 group matches, only giving away 1 point, and directly qualified for the semis without having to play the pre-semis. Moon 2, a team composed of more recent Moons, 3 Skywalkers and 1 Red Nuts, won their first match against FreezzBeezz, 7-4. They then lost against Gentle and thus had to play pre-semis, that they won against Diabolic.

Unfortunately, the two teams played each other, Moon 1 won fairly easily despite a good fight put up by Moon 2. In the other semi-final, Gentle won against Beezzz. For the “bronze”, Moon 2 were a bit tired and began badly, 4-0 for the Beezzz, but then came back bit by bit, and finally lost by only one point, 6-5. In the final, Moon 1 brilliantly started the match 5-1, then went on carefully playing the rest of the game to finally win, yet again, a “classico” final against Gentle, 8-5.

And here’s to a second Champion title for the Mooncatchers!

Most of the players from both teams that were playing in this final are members of the U17 Belgian national team, that will play in the OEYUC in Gent this year, and the same goes for the “guests” playing for Moon 2.

I personally found the level of play to be quite high for young kids of maximum 16 years old. Many parents of U14 players that stayed to watch and cheer for the U17, told me that they had been equally impressed. It has to be noted that the level of Spirit was very high.

In the U19 division, there was only one Moon team. After 2 victories in the group stage against Jet Set Cream and Beezzz, they went directly to the semis, without pre-semis. In the semis, they played Gentle in a very tight and intense match. Several times, the Moon had the opportunity to take the break, but each time failed to convert their offense into a score. The score was quite tight, 3-2, 3-3, 4-3, 4-4, 5-4…, and finally, with a break and a final score of 6-4, Moon took the match to play the U19 finals. We could start dreaming of the 3 titles.

In the other semi-final, Jet Set 1 took the win against FreezzzBeezzz. Gentle won the “bronze” with a score of 5-4 against Beezzz, in a very nice match.

The final turned out to be very interesting, between the Jet Set players who were very physical/fast, but less experienced and technical than the Moon. Jet Set often played a 4-man defense when the Moon got up to their zone line, and the field being quite narrow, this complicated things for the Moon. But thanks to a few crafty “blades” and despite one or two mistakes, the Moon had a 3-point lead when only 3 minutes were left. They concluded the match 6-5, despite a good comeback from Jet Set.

Quite a few U19 players are also members of the national U20 Belgian team that will play in the WUYC in Wroclaw this summer.

The Spirit of the Game was also excellent in the U19 division, and it must be said that things always run smoothly in Belgium, better and better even, if it’s possible.

Mooncatchers are three times Belgian Junior Indoor Champions!

Around 7.30pm, the 40-minute return trip to Uccle with Christophe began, which was a pure moment of happiness, where we reviewed what had happened during the day and all its beautiful moments, and during which we could marvel together about the accomplished work and the work that’s still to come.

Belgian Ultimate and the Mooncatchers have a brilliant future, which is an obvious conclusion after such a day.

Pour ce 1er Championnat de Belgique Junior Indoor officiel de l'histoire, pas moins de 5 équipes Mooncatchers étaient inscrites: 2 équipes en U14 (né en 2003 ou après), 2 équipes en U17 (né en 2000 ou après) et 1 en U19 (1998 ou après). Christophe inscrivant en plus une nouvelle équipe de son école à Ixelles, AES, c'est plus de 50 jeunes bruxellois fanatiques de frisbee qui allaient être présents ce dimanche ! Nous rêvions secrètement aux 3 titres…

Le rendez-vous avait lieu à 7h30 à Uccle avec les U14. On arrive au très beau complexe sportif Sportoase de Leuven vers 8h30 et dès 9h le premier match d'une longue série débutait.

La division U14 commençait et les 2 équipes Moon 1 et Moon 2, après 3 victoires chacune, terminaient premier de leur poule, et s'évitaient donc en 1/2 finale. Moon 2 perd alors son 1er match du Championnat contre Gentle, sur le score sévère de 7-1 malgré avoir assez bien joué. Mais Gentle était plus fort. Dans l'autre 1/2 finale, Moon 1 gagnait contre les Diabolic assez facilement, 9-1.

Entre-temps les U17 et U19 avaient commencé leur tournoi, mais j'y reviendrai plus tard, division par division.

Les Moon 2 U14 rejouaient alors contre les Diabolic pour "le bronze" et après un très beau match, Moon 2 l'emporte 7-1. La finale pouvait commencer entre Gentle et Moon 1, le "belgian classico" déjà en U14. Ce fut un super match de part et d'autre, où les défenses prenaient souvent le pas, et il était difficile pour les 2 équipes de marquer facilement, 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, la fin du temps est déjà là et c'est à l'universe point, après une belle longue - une faute - disc à la ligne - une passe - point - match, que Moon 1 remporte le titre de Champion de Belgique en U14. La fin était un peu confuse, mais les p'tits Moons méritent leur victoire contre une très bonne équipe de Gentle.

Le Spirit of the Game dans cette finale et dans cette division U14 a été très bon sur l'ensemble de la journée. Les équipes connaissant assez bien les règles, très peu de travel (sauf AES, mais ils commencent), très chouette ambiance, malgré une "compétition avec médailles" entre jeunes de 13 ans maximum.

Un p'tit mot pour l'équipe de Tof d'AES qui gagnera le 1er match de son histoire pour la 7ème/8ème place contre les mini-Gentle, dans un match qui s'est déroulé dans une ambiance épique, avec des enfants de 10 ans déchaînés ! 8-4, mais c'est anecdotique, quel match, quel plaisir !

En U17, Moon 1 gagne ses 2 premiers match de poule facilement en n'encaissant qu'un seul point et se qualifie directement pour les 1/2 sans devoir passer par la pré-demi. Moon 2, équipe composée des plus nouveaux Moons et de 3 Skywalkers et 1 Red Nuts, gagnera son premier match contre les FreezzzBeezzz, 7-4. Ils perdront ensuite contre Gentle et devront donc passer par la pré-demi qu'ils gagneront contre les Diabolics.

2 équipes Moon en 1/2 finale en U17 aussi !

Hélas, les 2 équipes jouent l'une contre l'autre, Moon 1 gagne assez facilement malgré une belle résistance de Moon 2. Dans l'autre 1/2 finale, Gentle bat les Beezzz. Pour le "bronze", les Moon 2 un peu fatigué commenceront très mal, 4-0 pour les Beezzz, mais reviendront progressivement, ne s'inclinant finalement que d'1 petit point, 6-5. En finale, Moon 1 entamera brillamment le match, 5-1, et pourra ensuite maîtriser la suite et gagner cette nouvelle finale "classico" contre Gentle 8-5.

Et un 2ème titre de Champion pour les Mooncatchers !

La plupart des joueurs des 2 équipes qui participaient à cette finale font partie de l'équipe nationale U17 qui jouera les OEYUC à Gent cette année, idem pour les "guests" de Moon 2. J'ai trouvé le niveau de jeu réellement très bon pour des jeunes de 16 ans maximum. De nombreux parents de joueurs U14 qui étaient restés voir et supporter les U17, m'ont fait part du fait qu'ils étaient également impressionnés. Le Spirit était vraiment élevé, il faut le remarquer.

En U19, une seule équipe Moon. 2 victoires en poule contre Jet Set Cream et les Beezzz, et ils sont en 1/2 finale directement, sans pré-demi. En 1/2 finale, ils rencontrent Gentle dans un très accroché et intense match. A plusieurs reprises, les Moons ont l'occasion de faire le break, mais chaque fois ils échouent leur attaque. Le score reste très serré, 3-2, 3-3, 4-3, 4-4, 5-4..., et enfin, le break, score final 6-4, Moon en finale en U19, on peut rêver aux 3 titres. Dans l'autre 1/2, c'est Jet Set 1 qui l'emporte sur les FreezzzBeezzz. Gentle gagnera le "bronze" 5-4 contre les Beezzz, très beau match.

La finale sera très intéressante entre des Jet Set très physiques/rapides, mais moins techniques et expérimentés que les Mooncatchers. Jet Set joue souvent la défense de zone à 4 sur la ligne lorsque les Moons s'approchent de la zone, le terrain est fort étroit, ce qui complique la tâche des Moons, mais grâce à quelques beau petits "blades", malgré l'un ou l'autre raté, les Moons ont 3 points d'avance lorsqu'il reste 3 minutes de jeu, et ils gèrent cette fin de match en s'imposant finalement 6-5, malgré une belle remontée de Jet Set.

De nombreux joueurs U19 présents font aussi partie de l'équipe nationale U20 qui jouera aux WUYC à Wroclaw cet été.

Le Spirit of the Game a aussi été très bon dans cette division U19, et il faut bien dire qu'en Belgique cela se passe toujours aussi bien, de mieux en mieux même, si c'était encore possible.

Et de 3 titres de Champion pour les Mooncatchers !

Vers 19h30, les 40 minutes de retour avec Christophe vers Uccle ont été un pur moment de bonheur où nous avons passé en revue cette journée et tous ces beaux moments, où nous avons pu apprécier ensemble le travail déjà accompli et celui encore à venir !

L'Ultimate belge et les Moons ont un bel avenir, c'est évident comme conclusion après une telle journée.
